Subspecies
Sometimes considered to form a superspecies with Tepui Brush-finch (Atlapetes personatus) and Fulvous-headed Brush-finch (Atlapetes fulviceps); likely closely related to former, but latter may not belong in such a group.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
benedettii Phelps & Gilliard, 1941 - Mountains of Falcón, Lara and Trujillo, in north-western Venezuela.
denisei (Hellmayr, 1911) - Northern and north-eastern Venezuela (Carabobo and Aragua east to Monagas and Sucre).
albigula Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1946 - Northern Táchira, in western Venezuela.
zimmeri Meyer de Schauensee, 1947 - Eastern slope of eastern Andes of Colombia (southern Norte de Santander and north-eastern Boyacá) and Venezuela (western Táchira).
majusculus Todd, 1919 - Slope of eastern Andes in northern Boyacá (Colombia).
semirufus (Boissonneau, 1840) - Eastern slope of eastern Andes in Cundinamarca (Colombia).
