Subspecies
Sometimes placed in a separate genus, Cristemberiza. Recent phylogenetic analyses indicate that this is a sister-species of Slaty Bunting (Emberiza siemsseni). Geographical variation not fully understood and complicated further because descriptions of some proposed subspecies were based on individuals in passage. Further study is required.
Proposed subspecies ticehursti (described from Sidemi R, in southern Ussuriland) included within nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
elegans Temminck, 1835 - Breeds from Russian Far East and north-eastern China to Korea and Tsushima I (south-western Japan). Winters mainly in Korea, southern Japan and south-eastern China.
elegantula Swinhoe, 1870 - Breeds in central China (southern Gansu and southern Shaanxi south to Yunnan, Guizhou and Hunan); winter records south to north-eastern Myanmar.
