Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry grassland and shrubland, dry savanna, rocky areas. From 200 - 2,900 m.

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi (B) (NB), Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Oman (B), Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Egypt.

Subspecies
Subspecies septemstriata sometimes thought to be a hybrid between nominate and goslingi.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • goslingi Smith, 1836   -  Mauritania and Senegal east to Cameroon, north-eastern DRCongo and south-western Sudan. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-throated Bunting (Emberiza goslingi).
  • septemstriata Rüppell, 1837   -  Eastern Sudan and northern and central Ethiopia east to Eritrea and north-western Somalia.
  • arabica (Lorenz von Liburnau, L & Hellmayr, 1902)   -  Southern Arabia.
  • insularis (Ogilvie-Grant and H. O. Forbes, 1899)   -  Socotra I.
  • tahapisi Smith, 1836   -  Southern Ethiopia south through eastern Africa to south-eastern South Africa. Also locally in Angola, and southern Gabon east to southern DRCongo.
  • nivenorum (Winterbottom, 1965)   -  Southern Angola south to central Namibia.
