Proposed subspecies huttoni (described from Afghanistan) has features considered to lie within range of variation of nominate, with which it is synonymized. Geographical variation somewhat clinal and variable.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cerrutii de Filippi, 1863 - Breeds from south-eastern Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan east to western and northern Iran and southern Turkmenistan; assumed to winter in India.
neobscura Paynter, 1970 - Breeds north-eastern Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan east to Altai ranges, south-western Mongolia and north-western China (north-western Xinjiang); assumed to winter in India.
buchanani Blyth, 1844 - Breeds from southern Uzbekistan and Pamirs of Tajikistan south to northern and central Afghanistan and south-western Pakistan (Baluchistan). Winters over most of western India (south to Hyderabad).
