Vagrant to Bhutan, Hong Kong (China), Oman, Russia (Central Asian), Syrian Arab Republic.

Subspecies
Forms a species group with Cinereous Bunting (Emberiza cineracea), Ortolan Bunting (Emberiza hortulana) and Cretzschmar's Bunting (Emberiza caesia).

Proposed subspecies huttoni (described from Afghanistan) has features considered to lie within range of variation of nominate, with which it is synonymized. Geographical variation somewhat clinal and variable.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • cerrutii de Filippi, 1863   -  Breeds from south-eastern Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan east to western and northern Iran and southern Turkmenistan; assumed to winter in India.
  • neobscura Paynter, 1970   -  Breeds north-eastern Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan east to Altai ranges, south-western Mongolia and north-western China (north-western Xinjiang); assumed to winter in India.
  • buchanani Blyth, 1844   -  Breeds from southern Uzbekistan and Pamirs of Tajikistan south to northern and central Afghanistan and south-western Pakistan (Baluchistan). Winters over most of western India (south to Hyderabad).
