Subspecies
Forms a superspecies, and previously treated as conspecific, with Rock Bunting (Emberiza cia).

Proposed subspecies nanshanica, described from central China (R Churmyk, basin of upper Hwang-he, in eastern Qinghai), and gobica, from west-central Mongolia (southern slope of Khangai Mts), synonymized with nominate, and, also in central China, styani (from Songpan, in western Sichuan) and bangsi (from Pashui, in Shaanxi) are treated as synonyms of omissa.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • decolorata Sushkin, 1925   -  North-western China (foothills of southern and eastern Tien Shan, in western Xinjiang); in winter also in valley of upper Syr Darya.
  • godlewskii Taczanowski, 1874   -  Russian Altai east through Sayans to southern end of L Baikal and western Transbaikalia, Mongolia, and northern China (south to northern and eastern Qinghai and Gansu).
  • khamensis Sushkin, 1925   -  South-central China from southern Qinghai south to southern and south-eastern Tibetan Plateau (to Lhasa and Gyantse regions) and western Sichuan (to c. 29º north).
  • omissa Rothschild, 1921   -  Eastern China from southern Heilongjiang south to northern and eastern Sichuan.
  • yunnanensis Sharpe, 1902   -  Southern China in extreme south-eastern Tibetan Plateau and northern Yunnan east to central Sichuan. Also north-eastern Myanmar in winter.
