Affinities uncertain, perhaps a distant relative of Meadow Bunting (Emberiza cioides). Has been thought to be closer to Pine Bunting (Emberiza leucocephalos) than to Chestnut Bunting (Emberiza rutila) or Black-headed Bunting (Emberiza melanocephala).
