Habitat
Montane and lowland deciduous taiga forest. Also mixed lowland broadleaf forest in summer and parks, gardens and woodlands in winter.

Range (Guide)

China (mainland), Hong Kong (China), Japan, North Korea (B), Russia (Asian), South Korea, Taiwan (China).

Easern Asia, icluding north-eastern China, Ussuriland and Sakhalin, perhaps northern Korea, migratingthrough eastern China and wintering to southern China. Accidental to Taiwan

Voice
A deep, hard 'tuk-tuk'. Song consists of 4 - 5 strongly whistled notes, rising and falling and ending in a longer note, 'tsuki-hi-hoshi'.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

magnirostris Hartert, 1896 - Breeds Russian Far East (eastern Amurland and southern Ussuriland), Sakhalin I and north-eastern China (northern and eastern Heilongjiang and eastern Jilin). Winters in southern China (Guizhou east to Fujian).
personata (Temminck & Schlegel, 1848) - Breeds northern and central Japan (Hokkaido and northern Honshu). Winters south to southern Japan.
