Habitat
Lowland and montane deciduous taiga-forest or woodlands and orchards in summer. Also parks and gardens in winter.

Voice
A very loud 'tek-tek' or 'dek-dek'. Song comprises a loudly whistled 'chee chee choree kirichoo', similar to that of the Japanese Grosbeak (Eophona personata).

Subspecies
Geographical variation in plumage weak, not constant, and intermediates occur.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

migratoria Hartert, 1903 - Breeds eastern Siberia and Russian Far East (eastern Transbaikalia, middle Amurland and southern Ussuriland), north-eastern China (Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang) and Korea; migrates to southern Japan (southern Honshu and Kyushu), eastern China (Guangxi east to Fujian) and Taiwan.
sowerbyi Riley, 1915 - Breeds central and east-central China (western Sichuan and Hubei east to Shanghai); migrates to Yunnan.
