Habitat
Lowland and montane deciduous taiga-forest or woodlands and orchards in summer. Also parks and gardens in winter.

China (mainland), Hong Kong (China), Japan, Laos, Myanmar, North Korea (B), Russia (Asian), South Korea, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Vietnam.

Voice
A very loud 'tek-tek' or 'dek-dek'. Song comprises a loudly whistled 'chee chee choree kirichoo', similar to that of the Japanese Grosbeak (Eophona personata).

Subspecies
Geographical variation in plumage weak, not constant, and intermediates occur.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • migratoria Hartert, 1903   -  Breeds eastern Siberia and Russian Far East (eastern Transbaikalia, middle Amurland and southern Ussuriland), north-eastern China (Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang) and Korea; migrates to southern Japan (southern Honshu and Kyushu), eastern China (Guangxi east to Fujian) and Taiwan.
  • sowerbyi Riley, 1915   -  Breeds central and east-central China (western Sichuan and Hubei east to Shanghai); migrates to Yunnan.
