Subspecies
Subspecies ricketti scarcely separable from nominate and perhaps better subsumed within it.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
nipalensis Hodgson, 1836 - Himalayas from Himachal Pradesh east to north-eastern India (to southern Assam) and south-western China (south-eastern Xizang).
ricketti La Touche, 1905 - North-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, south-eastern Assam and Nagaland), southern and south-eastern China (eastern Xizang to western Sichuan, and north-western Yunnan east to Fujian and Guangdong), northern Myanmar and north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin).
uchidai Kuroda, Nagamichi, 1916 - Taiwan.
victoriae Rippon, 1906 - Western Myanmar (Chin Hills).
waterstradti Hartert, 1902 - Mountains of Peninsular Malaysia (Selangor east to Pahang). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Malay Bullfinch (Pyrrhula waterstradti).
