Dominican Republic (B) (NB), Haiti (B).

Vagrant to Jamaica.

Mountains of Hispaniola.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 600 - 3,375 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction and ragmentation through clearance for small-scale agriculture, uncontrolled stand replacement fires, are the main threats.

Voice
A high, emphatic 'chu-chu-chu-chu'. Also a soft warble.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Loxia leucoptera (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Two-barred Crossbill (Loxia leucoptera) and Hispaniolan Crossbill (Loxia megaplaga) following AOU (2003).

Previously considered conspecific with Two-barred Crossbill (Loxia leucoptera), but differs in plumage details; recent genetic analysis indicates that the two are better treated as separate species.
