Rhodopechys sanguineus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Eurasian Crimson-winged Finch (Rhodopechys sanguineus) and African Crimson-winged Finch (Rhodopechys alienus) following Kirwan et al. (2006) and Tobias et al. (2010), who split the form aliena on the basis of longer bill and tarsus (score 1) and shorter tail (score 2); face less red, none before supercilium, no pink tips to rump, less pink in wing (score 2), male with more restricted black on cap (1), chin and throat grey-white plus breast-band spotted (1), and several other differences which cannot be scored.
