Subspecies
No subspecies.

Northern Grosbeak-canary (Crithagra donaldsoni) and Southern Grosbeak-canary (Crithagra buchanani) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include buchanani as a subspecies of Northern Grosbeak-canary (Crithagra donaldsoni).

Forms a superspecies with Southern Grosbeak-canary (Crithagra buchanani) and possibly Brimstone Canary (Crithagra sulphurata). Previously considered conspecific with Southern Grosbeak-canary (Crithagra buchanani).
