Subspecies
Possibly conspecies with or forming a superspecies with Forest Canary (Crithagra scotops).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
transvaalensis Roberts, 1940 - North-eastern South Africa (northern and eastern Limpopo).
umbrosus Clancey, 1964 - Eastern and southern South Africa from Mpumalanga and western KwaZulu-Natal south through southern eastern Cape (above 1070 m) to southern western Cape.
scotops (Sundevall, 1850) - Northern Swaziland, eastern Lesotho and lowland southern KwaZulu-Natal south to coastal eastern Cape (below 920 m).
kirbyi Dowsett, 2012 - North-eastern South Africa (Limpopo).
