Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist shrubland, high altitude shrubland.

Range (Guide)
South Africa, Swaziland.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and stable.

A soft, high-pitched 'tseeek' uttered in contact. A quiet, jumbled song is seldom heard.

Subspecies
Possibly conspecies with or forming a superspecies with Forest Canary (Crithagra scotops).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • transvaalensis Roberts, 1940   -  North-eastern South Africa (northern and eastern Limpopo).
  • umbrosus Clancey, 1964   -  Eastern and southern South Africa from Mpumalanga and western KwaZulu-Natal south through southern eastern Cape (above 1070 m) to southern western Cape.
  • scotops (Sundevall, 1850)   -  Northern Swaziland, eastern Lesotho and lowland southern KwaZulu-Natal south to coastal eastern Cape (below 920 m).
  • kirbyi Dowsett, 2012   -  North-eastern South Africa (Limpopo).
