Subspecies
Serinus canicollis (Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993), Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993)) has been split into Cape Canary (Serinus canicollis) and Yellow-crowned Canary (Serinus flavivertex), following Ryan et al. (2004), owing to significant morphological differences between males of the two taxa.
May form a superspecies with Cape Canary (Serinus canicollis), and previously considered conspecific.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
flavivertex (Blanford, 1869) - Eritrea, Ethiopia, south-eastern Sudan, central and south-western Kenya and northern Tanzania.
sassii Neumann, 1922 - Eastern DRCongo, south-western Uganda, western Rwanda, western Burundi, south-western and southern Tanzania, north-eastern Zambia and northern Malawi.
huillensis Sousa, 1889 - West-central Angola (southern Cuanza Sul south to Huí.
