Scarce except in the extreme south-west. Sedentary.

Habitat
Dense riparian vegetation. especially dense shrubby areas within eucalypt forests.

Australia (B).

South-western Western Australia from Darling Range south to Manjimup and Pemberton, and eastern along coast to Cape Le Grand National Park and Israelite Bay.
 
Coastal south-western Australia, from the Darling Range to Esperance.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Vulnerable.

Habits
Usually in twos or small flocks of upto 10 birds.

Food
Most seeds of grasses and sedges. Also some invertebrates, mainly insects.

Voice
A soft, mournful whistle 'wheee' and 'wheeoo-ee'. Soft, murmured contact calls.

Nest
Bottle-shaped, composed of green leaves, usually placed at the extremity of a horizontal branch of a swamp banksia or other bush, up to 5 m above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
4 - 6; pure white; oval; about 18 x 12 mm. Incubation: 12 - 14 days; by both sexes.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 21 - 24 days.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
Only a slight risk of confusion with Red-browed Finch (Neochmia temporalis) which was introduced into WA.
