Patchy throughout its range. Often observed beyong the normal range.

Habitat
Grasslands bordering watercourse and stony hillsides with abundant spinifex.

Arid and semi-arid country (mainly north of Tropic of Capricorn) discontinuously in Western Australia (mainly Kimberley Division and Pilbara Region south to Carnarvon), Northern Territory (mainly Tennant Creek south to Ayers Rock), western Queensland (east to Mt Isa and Longreach) and South Australia (mainly around L Eyre, L Torrens and L Frome, and Flinders Ranges).
 
North-western Australia, southern Northern Territory, western Queenslands and northern South Australia.

Habits
In pairs or small flocks.

Food
Seeds and insects. Occasionally fruit and blades of grass.

Voice
A scratchy, staccato 'chek chek', a rapid 'chek-did-did-dit' and a reedy 'ched up, cheddy up'.

Nest
Bottle-shaped, with a short entrance tunnel, composed of twigs, bark fragments, spinifex stems and grass, on a platform of small stones and lumps of soil, at the base of a clump of spinifex.

Eggs (Guide)
3 or 4; plain white; oval; about 14 x 11 mm. Incubation: about 14 days; probably by both parents but more often by female at start.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 21 - 23 days.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
Crimson Finch (Neochmia phaeton) which is slightly larger, has very little black body plumage, has an all red bill, and smaller white spots on the flanks and Crimson Chat (Epthianura tricolor) which has a much finer bill, a distinctive white throat, and no black on the underparts of white spots on the flanks.
