Red-headed Bluebill (Spermophaga ruficapilla) [XC137899]
by Peter Boesman from Ngogo Research Camp, Kibale National Park, Kabarole, Western Region, Uganda (call)
Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Western Bluebill (Spermophaga haematina), and sometimes considered conspecific. The ranges of the two meet in north-east, eastern and southern DRCongo (Uele, Kivu and Kasai), where specimens are intermediate in plumage, but majority of birds are clearly of one or the other species, indicating that the two are distinct.
Proposed subspecies kilgoris (described from Kilgoris, in south-western Kenya) treated as a synonym of nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
ruficapilla (Shelley, 1888) - South-eastern Central African Republic, north-east, eastern and southern DRCongo, extreme southern Sudan, Uganda, western and central Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, western Tanzania and northern Angola.
cana (Friedmann, 1927) - Usambara Mts, in north-eastern Tanzania.
