Subspecies
Sometimes placed with Golden-backed Bishop (Euplectes aureus) and Black-winged Bishop (Euplectes hordeaceus) in a separate genus, Groteiplectes.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

ansorgei (Hartert, 1899) - Western, eastern and southern Cameroon, southern Central African Republic, northern PRCongo, northern and north-eastern DRCongo, southern Sudan, western and south-western Ethiopia, Uganda and western Kenya.
gierowii Cabanis, 1880 - South-western DRCongo and north-western Angola.
friederichseni Fischer, GA & Reichenow, 1884 - Southern Kenya and north-central Tanzania.
