Subspecies
Red-headed Fody (Foudia eminentissima) and Forest Fody (Foudia omissa) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include omissa as a subspecies of Red-headed Fody (Foudia eminentissima).

Has been thought to form a superspecies with Forest Fody (Foudia omissa) and Mauritius Fody (Foudia rubra). Subspecies possibly represent more than one species. Further research is required.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

consobrina Milne-Edwards & Oustalet, 1885 - Grand Comoro (Njazidja), in north-western Comoro Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grand Comoro Fody (Foudia consobrina).
eminentissima Bonaparte, 1851 - Moh�li (Mwali), in west-central Comoros.
anjuanensis (Milne-Edwards & Oustalet, 1888) - Anjouan (Ndzuani), in central Comoros.
algondae (Schlegel, 1867) - Mayotte (Maore), in south-eastern Comoros.
aldabrana Ridgway, 1893 - Aldabra Atoll, in south-western Seychelles. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Aldabra Fody (Foudia aldabrana).
