Subspecies
Formerly thought to form a superspecies with Holub's Golden Weaver (Ploceus xanthops), but the two differ in breeding behaviour and ecology, and ranges overlap.
Proposed subspecies tongensis (described from southern Mozambique) synonymized with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
aureoflavus Smith, A, 1839 - South-eastern Kenya (southern from R Tana), coastal Tanzania (including Pemba I and Zanzibar), eastern Malawi and northern Mozambique.
subaureus Smith, 1839 - Central and southern Mozambique southern along coast to extreme eastern Swaziland and south-eastern South Africa.
