Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Dunnock (Prunella modularis) and Maroon-backed Accentor (Prunella immaculata). Northern populations described as subspecies fervida, but variation considered insufficient to warrant recognition of geographical subspecies. Birds in extreme northern (Sakhalin) possibly a distinct subspecies. Further study is needed.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
rubida (Temminck & Schlegel, 1848) - Japan.
fervida Sharpe, 1883 - Honshu (Japan). Winters to Kyushu.
