Subspecies
Sometimes considered to form a superspecies with Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum trochileum). Has hybridized with Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum trochileum) in eastern Borneo (Samarinda), and a hybrid with Fire-breasted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum ignipectus) recorded in south-eastern China (Fujian). Some subspecies well differentiated, but situation complicated by presence of non-geographical colour morphs "pryeri" (mainly Malay Peninsula and northern Borneo) and "hosii" (Borneo). Subspecies ignitum poorly differentiated, possibly better merged with nominate. In addition, named subspecies erythronotum (China), siamense (from Lat Bua Kao, in eastern Thailand), coccinea (China) and hainanum (Hainan I) all subsumed in nominate. Population in northern Borneo (Sabah) possibly represents an as yet undescribed subspecies.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • cruentatum (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Eastern Nepal, north-eastern India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and southern China (south-eastern Xizang, southern Yunnan east, including Hainan I, to Fujian), south to Thailand and Indochina.
  • ignitum (Begbie, 1834)   -  Peninsular Malaysia and Riau Archipelago.
  • sumatranum Cabanis, 1877   -  Sumatra and some satellites.
  • simalurense Salomonsen, 1961   -  Simeulue I, off NW Sumatra.
  • niasense Meyer de Schauensee & Ripley, 1940   -  Nias I, off western Sumatra.
  • batuense Richmond, 1912   -  Batu Is and Mentawai Is, off south-western Sumatra.
  • nigrimentum Salvadori, 1874   -  Borneo.
