Subspecies
Tongue morphology similar to that of Orange-bellied Flowerpecker (Dicaeum trigonostigma), Buru Flowerpecker (Dicaeum erythrothorax), Midget Flowerpecker (Dicaeum aeneum), Blood-breasted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum sanguinolentum) and Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum cruentatum). Original description contained spellings "pygmaea" and "pygmea". The former was adopted by same author acting as First Reviser in 1858.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- fugaense Parkes, 1988 - Calayan and Fuga (north of Luzon), in extreme northern Philippines.
- salomonseni Parkes, 1962 - North-western Luzon, in northern Philippines.
- pygmaeum (Kittlitz, 1833) - North-central and central Philippines (central and southern Luzon, Corregidor, Lubang, Polillo Is, Mindoro, Marinduque, Maestre de Campo, Semirara, Sibay, Boracay, Romblon, Sibuyan, Ticao, Masbate, Samar, Gigantes, Calagna-an, Sicogon, Guimaras, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, Leyte).
- palawanorum Hachisuka, 1926 - Calauit, Culion, Palawan and Balabac, in western Philippines.
- davao Mearns, 1905 - Camiguin Sur and Mindanao, in southern Philippines.
