Subspecies
Dicaeum austral (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Red-keeled Flowerpecker (Dicaeum australe) and Black-belted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum haematostictum) following Brooks et al. (1992).
Forms a superspecies with Red-keeled Flowerpecker (Dicaeum australe), and sometimes considered conspecific. Scarlet-collared Flowerpecker (Dicaeum retrocinctum) may possibly be a part of same superspecies, but differs in several characters.
Proposed subspecies whiteheadi (described from Mt Canloan, on Negros) considered not distinguishable from birds elsewhere in range.
