Subspecies
No subspecies.
Dicaeum australe (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Red-keeled Flowerpecker (Dicaeum australe) and Black-belted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum haematostictum) following Brooks et al. (1992).
Forms a superspecies with Black-belted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum haematostictum), and sometimes considered conspecific. Scarlet-collared Flowerpecker (Dicaeum retrocinctum) possibly part of same superspecies, but differs in several characters. Tongue morphology of present species similar to that of Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker (Dicaeum melanozanthum) and Buzzing Flowerpecker (Dicaeum hypoleucum). Geographical variation minor. Birds from Cebu described as subspecies flaviventer, but considered insufficiently distinct from those in rest of range to warrant recognition.
