Subspecies
Nominate subspecies particularly distinctive, possibly represents a separate species. Further study is required.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
anthonyi (McGregor, 1914) - Northern Luzon (Mt Polis, Mt Puguis, Mt Tabuan and Mt Dipalayag), in northern Philippines.
masawan Rand & Rabor, 1957 - Western Mindanao (Mt Malindang), in southern Philippines.
kampalili Manuel & Gilliard, 1953 - Northern, central and south-eastern Mindanao (Mt Kitanglad, Daggayan near Mt Balatukan, Mt Pasian, Mt Kampalili, Mt McKinley and Mt Apo). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Flame-crowned Flowerpecker (Dicaeum kampalili).
