Subspecies
Subspecies septentrionalis intergrades with oblitus in southern Thailand. Proposed subspecies opistatus (from Nias I) considered insufficiently distinct from nominate to warrant separation.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
septentrionalis Robinson & Kloss, 1921 - Extreme S
Myanmar (southern Tenasserim) and peninsular Thailand.
oblitus (Mayr, 1938) - Extreme southern Thailand and Peninsular
Malaysia.
maculatus (Temminck & Laugier, 1836) - Sumatra (including Nias I
and Belitung) and Borneo.
natunensis (Chasen, 1935) - Northern Natuna Is (Bunguran).
