Subspecies
Has sometimes been considered conspecific with Javan Fulvetta (Alcippe pyrrhoptera). Subspecies in peninsular India (nominate and brucei), with somewhat different songs from those of other subspecies, considered possibly to represent a separate species.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
brucei Hume, 1870 - Central and southern India.
poioicephala (Jerdon, 1844) - Western Ghats, in western India.
fusca Godwin-Austen, 1877 - Eastern Bangladesh and north-eastern India (southern Assam) east to north, north-western and north-central Myanmar.
phayrei Blyth, 1845 - South-western Myanmar (east to R Irrawaddy).
haringtoniae Hartert, 1909 - Eastern Myanmar and north-western Thailand.
alearis (Bangs & van Tyne, 1930) - Southern China (south-eastern Yunnan), northern and central Laos, northern Vietnam (western Tonkin) and northern Thailand.
karenni Robinson & Kloss, 1923 - South-eastern and southern Myanmar (south to northern Tenasserim) and adjacent western Thailand.
