A repetitive low 'jurr' pr purring 'churrk'. A high-pitched 'wheet churrk' and a louder, rising 'brueet' uttered in alarm. Song is a gloomy warble.

Subspecies
Suggested as forming a superspecies with Rusty-capped Fulvetta (Schoeniparus dubius), and often considered conspecific, but the two occur sympatrically in China and differ morphologically.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
olivaceus (Gould, 1863) - South-central China (central and eastern Sichuan east to southern Shaanxi, western Hubei and northern Guizhou).
weigoldi (Stresemann, 1923) - Red Basin of Sichuan (China).
superciliaris (David, 1874) - South-eastern China (eastern Guangxi east to eastern Hunan, south-eastern Anhui, south-western Zhejiang, northern Fujian and northern Guangdong).
argutus (E. J. O. Hartert, 1910) - Hainan I. (off south-eastern China).
