The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
kangrae Ticehurst & Whistler, 1924 - Northern India (Himachal Pradesh east to Uttaranchal Pradesh).
vinipectus (Hodgson, 1837) - Western and central Nepal and adjacent southern China (southern Xizang).
chumbiensis Kinnear, 1939 - Eastern Nepal east to Bhutan.
austeni (Ogilvie-Grant, 1895) - North-eastern India (Barail Range, in southern Assam, and Nagaland) and adjacent northern Myanmar (Mt Saramati).
perstriata Mayr, 1941 - Extreme north-eastern India (eastern Arunachal Pradesh), northern Myanmar and adjacent southern China (north-western Yunnan west of R Salween).
bieti (Oustalet, 1892) - Southern China from western and central Sichuan south to north-western (east of R Salween) and north-eastern Yunnan.
ripponi (Harington, 1913) - Chin Hills, in western Myanmar.
valentinae (Delacour & Jabouille, 1930) - Western Tonkin (Fan Si Pan Mts), in northern Vietnam.
