Subspecies
Geographically isolated subspecies woodi recently suggested to be sufficiently distinctive to warrant species status, but characters appear to be doubtfully strong enough and vocal evidence requires further study. A rigorous review is required.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
bonvaloti (Oustalet, 1892) - Southern China (west-central Sichuan south to south-eastern Xizang and north-western Yunnan).
lanceolatus Verreaux, J, 1871 - Central and southern China (southern Gansu, southern Shaanxi and western Hubei, south to central and northern Yunnan, central and eastern Sichuan and northern Guizhou) and north-eastern and central Myanmar.
latouchei (Stresemann, 1929) - South-eastern China (southern Guizhou, northern and central Guangxi, Guangdong, central Fujian).
woodi Finn, 1902 - North-eastern India (south-eastern Mizoram) and western Myanmar (Chin Hills). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mount Victoria Babax (Garrulax woodi).
