Subspecies
White-rumped Babbler (Turdoides leucopygia) and Hartlaub's Babbler (Turdoides hartlaubii) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include hartlaubii as a subspecies of Turdoides leucopygius. Gender agreement of leucopygia follows David and Gosselin (2002b).

May form a superspecies with White-rumped Babbler (Turdoides leucopygia), perhaps including also Black-faced Babbler (Turdoides melanops) and Black-lored Babbler (Turdoides sharpei). Often treated as conspecific with White-rumped Babbler (Turdoides leucopygia).

Proposed subspecies ater (from Rwanda south to north-eastern Zambia and south-western Tanzania) considered a synonym of nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • hartlaubii (Barboza du Bocage, 1868)   -  Rwanda and eastern and south-eastern DRCongo south to north-eastern and western Zambia and south-western Tanzania, and to central and south-eastern Angola and north-eastern Namibia.
  • griseosquamata Clancey, 1974   -  West-central Zambia south to northern Botswana and extreme western Zimbabwe.
