Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Black-lored Babbler (Turdoides sharpei) and Northern Pied Babbler (Turdoides hypoleuca), possibly including also Hinde's Babbler (Turdoides hindei). Birds from R Webbe Gestro, in southern Ethiopia, thought to represent an undescribed subspecies, and those from southern Ethiopia-north-eastern Kenya border region (Lak Bor watercourse, R Daua) another such. However, in each case the possibility of hybrid origin evidently not yet excluded (R Webbe Gestro birds uniform brown above, brownish-white below, iris red. Lak Bor birds intermediate between jubaensis and carolinae in extent of white on head).
