Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Orange-billed Babbler (Turdoides rufescens), and has been treated as conspecific. Subspecies somervillei sometimes thought to represent a separate species, but intergrades with malabarica.

Proposed subspecies orissae (from eastern India) treated as synonymous with nominate.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • sindiana (Ticehurst, 1920)   -  Pakistan (R Indus plains) and north-western India (from Himalayan foothills, Punjab and Haryana south to Rann of Kutch).
  • striata (Dumont, 1823)   -  Himalayan foothills from south-eastern Himachal Pradesh east to southern Nepal, southern Bhutan and western Assam, and southern in India to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, southern West Bengal and north-eastern Andhra Pradesh, and Bangladesh.
  • somervillei (Sykes, 1832)   -  Western peninsular India (south to Goa). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-winged Babbler (Turdoides somervillei).
  • malabarica (Jerdon, 1845)   -  South-western India.
  • orientalis (Jerdon, 1845)   -  Peninsular India except western and north-east.
