Subspecies
Geographical variation clinal, from palest in western (race hypoleucum) to darkest in eastern (nominate), merging through middle of Indian Subcontinent; birds from Nepal appear intermediate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
hypoleucum (Franklin, 1831) - Pakistan (Kohat and Indus valleys), south-western and south-central Nepal, and much of India except north-east.
nasale (Legge, 1879) - Sri Lanka.
saturatius (Ticehurst, 1922) - North-eastern India from northern West Bengal east to Assam and western Arunachal Pradesh (north of R Brahmaputra).
sinense (Gmelin, 1789) - North-eastern India (south of R Brahmaputra), eastern Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand (except south), southern China (western and southern Yunnan, south-western Guizhou, Guangxi, western Guangdong), Laos and Vietnam.
