Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
erythroptera (Blyth, 1842) - Extreme southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim) and southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and northern Natuna Is.
pyrrhophaea (Hartlaub, 1844) - Sumatra, including Batu Is, Bangka and Belitung.
fulviventris (Richmond, 1903) - Banyak Is, off north-western Sumatra.
bicolor (Blyth, 1865) - Northern Borneo (including Banggi I). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-hooded Babbler (Cyanoderma bicolor).
rufa (Chasen and Kloss, 1927) - South-western Borneo.
