Subspecies
Geographical variation slight and some subspecies possibly not tenable. Individuals of this genus observed in central Laos may belong with nominate subspecies of present species or with subspecies insuspecta of Rufous-fronted Babbler (Cyanoderma rufifrons). Further study is required.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
ruficeps (Blyth, 1847) - Eastern Nepal east to north-eastern India (eastern Arunachal Pradesh) and adjacent southern China (south-eastern Xizang).
rufipectus (Koelz, 1954) - Eastern Arunachal Pradesh south to Nagaland, northern Manipur and southern Assam (northern Cachar), in north-eastern India.
bhamoensis Harington, 1908 - North-eastern Myanmar and southern China (western and north-western Yunnan).
davidi Oustalet, 1899 - Central and south-eastern China (southern Shaanxi south to central Sichuan and southern and eastern Yunnan, east to Zhejiang and Guangdong), north-western Laos and northern Vietnam (Tonkin).
goodsoni Rothschild, 1903 - Hainan I.
praecognita (Swinhoe, 1866) - Taiwan.
pagana Riley, 1940 - Southern Laos and southern Vietnam (central and southern Annam).
