Subspecies
Subspecies present in northern Myanmar uncertain, presumed to be pectorale. Similarly, in Cambodia, subspecies in north-eastern presumably ubonense, in eastern deignani, and in south-eastern dilloni. Despite high number of named subspecies, several more may exist, e.g. in Myanmar (Arakan, and in Sittang valley), in north-central plains of Thailand, and in Peninsular Malaysia (Langkawi I).

The following 28 subspecies are recognised:

  • punctatum (Gould, 1838)   -  South-western Jammu and Kashmir east to Uttaranchal Pradesh, in northern India.
  • mandellii Blanford, 1871   -  Nepal east to north-eastern India (central Arunachal Pradesh).
  • ruficeps Swainson, 1832   -  Peninsular India except south.
  • olivaceum Jerdon, 1839   -  South-western India.
  • pallidum Abdulali, 1982   -  South-eastern India.
  • chamelum Deignan, 1947   -  North-eastern Indian states south of R Brahmaputra (except Manipur) and eastern Bangladesh.
  • pectorale Godwin-Austen, 1877   -  North-eastern India (eastern Arunachal Pradesh) and extreme northern Myanmar.
  • ripleyi Deignan, 1947   -  Margherita area of eastern Assam (north-eastern India).
  • vocale Deignan, 1951   -  Manipur Valley (north-eastern India).
  • stageri Deignan, 1947   -  Southern part of northern Myanmar.
  • hilarum Deignan, 1947   -  Western (northern Chin State) and central Myanmar.
  • victoriae Deignan, 1947   -  Central and southern Chin State (western Myanmar).
  • shanense Deignan, 1947   -  Eastern Myanmar and southern China (western and south-western Yunnan).
  • minus Hume, 1873   -  Southern Myanmar.
  • subochraceum Swinhoe, 1871   -  South-eastern Myanmar (including northern Tenasserim) and adjacent western Thailand.
  • insularum Deignan, 1947   -  Extreme southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim).
  • indistinctum Deignan, 1947   -  Extreme north-western Thailand.
  • chthonium Deignan, 1947   -  North-western Thailand (except extreme north).
  • elbeli Deignan, 1956   -  North-eastern Thailand.
  • dusiti Dickinson & Chaiyaphun, 1970   -  Western slope of Dong Phraya Fai range (western part of north-eastern Thailand).
  • acrum Deignan, 1947   -  Western and southern Thailand and northern Peninsular Malaysia.
  • oreum Deignan, 1947   -  Southern China (southern Yunnan), northern Laos and north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin).
  • vividum La Touche, 1921   -  South-eastern Yunnan and northern and central Vietnam (eastern Tonkin, northern and central Annam).
  • ubonense Deignan, 1947   -  North-eastern (eastern part) Thailand, southern Laos and adjacent north-eastern Cambodia.
  • euroum Deignan, 1947   -  South-eastern Thailand and Cambodia (except east).
  • deignani Delacour, 1951   -  Southern Vietnam (southern Annam) and adjacent eastern Cambodia.
  • dilloni Delacour, 1951   -  Southern Vietnam (Cochinchina) and adjacent south-eastern Cambodia.
  • smithi Riley, 1924   -  Coastal islands off south-eastern Thailand.
