Subspecies
Has been thought possibly to form a superspecies with Buff-breasted Babbler (Trichastoma tickelli), presumably including Sumatran Babbler (Trichastoma buettikoferi). Proposed subspecies besuki (from eastern Java) considered inseparable from nominate. Individuals of this species observed in northern and southern Borneo (eastern Sabah and southern Kalimantan) apparently not assigned to subspecies.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • canicapillus (Sharpe, 1887)   -  Northern Borneo (western Sabah).
  • longstaffi (Harrisson & Hartley, 1934)   -  North-western Borneo (eastern and north-eastern Sarawak and adjacent Kalimantan).
  • erythrote (Sharpe, 1883)   -  Western Borneo (south-western Sarawak and adjacent Kalimantan).
  • pyrrogenys (Temminck, 1827)   -  Java.
  • besuki (Kloss, 1931)   -  Eastern Java.
