Subspecies
Pellorneum tickelli (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Buff-breasted Babbler (Trichastoma tickelli) and Sumatran Babbler (Trichastoma buettikoferi) and both placed in the genus Trichastoma following Wells et al. (2001).

Formerly placed in genus Trichastoma. Has been thought possibly to form a superspecies with Temminck's Babbler (Trichastoma pyrrogenys), presumably including Sumatran Babbler (Trichastoma buettikoferi). Previously considered conspecific with Sumatran Babbler (Trichastoma buettikoferi).

Proposed subspecies garoense (from Meghalaya and Manipur, and adjacent areas in north-eastern India) may be worthy of recognition.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • assamense (Sharpe, 1883)   -  North-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, eastern and southern Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur), eastern Bangladesh and northern and western Myanmar.
  • grisescens (Ticehurst, 1932)   -  South-western Myanmar (west of R Irrawaddy).
  • fulvum (Walden, 1875)   -  Southern China (south-west to south-eastern Yunnan, western Guangxi), south-eastern Myanmar, north-western and northern Thailand, northern and central Laos and northern Vietnam (Tonkin, northern Annam).
  • annamense (Delacour, 1926)   -  Northern and eastern Cambodia, southern Laos and central and southern Vietnam (central and southern Annam, Cochinchina).
  • tickelli Blyth, 1859   -  Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim), western and southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
