Subspecies
Treated as forming a superspecies with Broad-tailed Grassbird (Schoenicola platyurus). Often considered conspecific with Broad-tailed Grassbird (Schoenicola platyurus). Subspecies alexinae intergrades with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
brevirostris (Sundevall, 1850) - Malawi and north-western Mozambique south to eastern South Africa (south to eastern Cape), Swaziland and Lesotho.
alexinae (Heuglin, 1863) - Sierra Leone (Tingi Mts) and adjacent parts of Guinea; extreme south-eastern Nigeria and Cameroon, southern Gabon and PRCongo east to eastern DRCongo, south to central and south-western Angola, northern and central Zambia and Malawi, and southern Sudan, western highlands of Ethiopia, and Rift Valley mountains in western and central Uganda, western and southern Kenya and western and northern Tanzania.
