Subspecies
Formerly treated as conspecific with Turner's Eremomela (Eremomela turneri), but the two found to be sympatric in eastern DRCongo.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
fantiensis Macdonald, 1940 - Eastern Sierra Leone, south-eastern Guinea, Liberia, southern Ivory Coast, southern Ghana, southern Togo and south-western Nigeria.
badiceps (Fraser, 1843) - Southern Nigeria (southern from Ife), Bioko I (Fernando Póo), southern Cameroon and south-western Central African Republic south to northern Angola (Cabinda, Cuanza Norte) and east to DRCongo (south to Kasai and Maniema) and western Uganda.
