Karoo and semi-desert scrub, usually in bushy areas on open fields, taller than average shrubs. Avoids watercourses with acacia trees.

Voice
A monotonous, frog-like 'swee swee swee' song, usually uttered before dawn. A soft 'pink pink' uttered in contact.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Senegal Eremomela (Eremomela pusilla), Green-backed Eremomela (Eremomela canescens) and Green-capped Eremomela (Eremomela scotops).

Proposed subspecies albigularis, described from Beaufort West, in north-eastern Western Cape (South Africa), synonymized with nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

damarensis (Smith, 1829) - Oosop area, in western Namibia.
gregalis (Smith, 1829) - South-western Namibia (southern from R Swakop) and south-western South Africa (south to western Cape and east to western eastern Cape).
albigularis (Hartlaub & Finsch, 1870) - South-western, southern South Africa.
