Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Senegal Eremomela (Eremomela pusilla), Green-backed Eremomela (Eremomela canescens) and Karoo Eremomela (Eremomela gregalis). Subspecies congensis intergrades with pulchra in northern Angola. Birds from this region sometimes recognized as subspecies angolensis.
Proposed subspecies occipitalis (described from R Pangani, in north-eastern Tanzania) and chlorochlamys (from Zimbabwe-Mozambique border) synonymized with nominate.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
congensis Reichenow, 1905 - South-eastern Gabon (Lekoni) south to northern Angola, east to south-western DRCongo (Kasai).
pulchra (Barboza du Bocage, 1878) - Angola, south-eastern and eastern DRCongo (Maniema and northern end of L Tanganyika south to Katanga), Zambia, western Malawi, north-eastern Namibia, and northern Botswana.
citriniceps (Reichenow, 1882) - South-western Uganda, western Kenya, western Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
kikuyuensis van Someren, 1931 - Central Kenya.
scotops Sundevall, 1850 - Coastal Kenya, eastern Tanzania (inland to Liwale, Songea and Kilosa), eastern and southern Malawi, northern and central Mozambique, Zimbabwe and adjacent eastern Botswana, north-eastern South Africa (Northern Province south to northern KwaZulu-Natal) and northern Swaziland.
