South-western and southern Madagascar from R Mangoky south to Cap Ste Marie and east to Fort Dauphin, extending inland to limit of southern subdesert forest.

Nesillas typica (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Madagascar Brush-warbler (Nesillas typica) and Subdesert Brush-warbler (Nesillas lantzii) following Schulenberg et al. (1993).
Formerly treated as a subspecies of Madagascar Brush-warbler (Nesillas typica), but does not interbreed with latter where ranges overlap.
