Subspecies
Nesillas typica (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Madagascar Brush-warbler (Nesillas typica) and Subdesert Brush-warbler (Nesillas lantzii) following Schulenberg et al. (1993).

Formerly treated as conspecific with Subdesert Brush-warbler (Nesillas lantzii) but the two occur sympatrically without interbreeding. Has also been considered conspecific with Grand Comoro Brush-warbler (Nesillas brevicaudata), but differs vocally. Subspecies longicaudata sometimes treated as a separate species.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

moheliensis Benson, 1960 - Moh�li (Mwali), in Comoro Is.
longicaudata (E. Newton, 1877) - Forest undergrowth of Anjouan (Comoro Islands).
typica (Hartlaub, 1860) - Northern, east, north-western and central Madagascar, to edge of western savanna.
obscura Delacour, 1931 - Western savanna of Madagascar.
ellisii (Schlegel & Pollen,1868) - Northern, north-eastern Madagascar.
