Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- rufifrons (Rüppell, 1840) - North-eastern.
- smithi (Sharpe, 1895) - South Sudan to south-eastern Ethiopia, Somalia, extreme north-eastern Uganda, Kenya, and north-eastern Tanzania.
- rufidorsalis (Sharpe, 1897) - South-eastern Kenya (Tsavo).
