Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Chestnut-throated Apalis (Apalis porphyrolaema) and Kabobo Apalis (Apalis kaboboensis) and all sometimes treated as conspecific. Form described as Artisornis metopias bensoni is a synonym of subspecies strausae.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
chapini Friedmann, 1928 - Highlands of central Tanzania.
strausae Boulton, 1931 - Southern Tanzania, north-eastern Zambia and northern and central Malawi.
