The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

aridulus Witherby, 1900 - Sahel from southern Mauritania and Senegal east to Sudan.
lavendulae Ogilvie-Grant & Reid, 1901 - Eritrea, Ethiopia, north-western Somalia and northern Kenya.
tanganyika Lynes, 1930 - Central and southern Kenya and Tanzania.
perplexus White, CMN, 1947 - North-eastern Zambia (Bangweulu swamps).
lobito Lynes, 1930 - Western Angola.
traylori Benson & Irwin, 1966 - Eastern Angola and western Zambia.
eremicus Clancey, 1984 - Southern Angola, west-central and southern Zambia, northern Namibia, northern Botswana and Zimbabwe.
kalahari Ogilvie-Grant, 1910 - Central Namibia, southern Botswana and South African plateau.
caliginus Clancey, 1955 - Eastern South Africa (lowveld and KwaZulu-Natal) and Swaziland.
