Subspecies
May be closely allied to the superspecies formed by Rufous Cisticola (Cisticola rufus) and Foxy Cisticola (Cisticola troglodytes), but overlaps in geographical range with both these species.

Proposed subspecies tenebricosus (southern Mozambique) synonymized with isabellinus.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

brachypterus (Sharpe, 1870) - Senegal east to western Sudan, south to northern Angola (Cabinda) and northern DRCongo.
hypoxanthus Hartlaub, 1881 - North-eastern DRCongo, southern Sudan and northern Uganda.
zedlitzi Reichenow, 1909 - Eritrea and Ethiopian Highlands.
katonae Madar�sz, 1904 - Central Kenya and northern Tanzania.
kericho Lynes, 1930 - South-western Kenya.
reichenowi Mearns, 1911 - Southern Somalia, coastal Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania.
ankole Lynes, 1930 - Eastern DRCongo and southern Uganda south to north-western Tanzania.
isabellinus Reichenow, 1907 - Central Tanzania and southern and eastern Zambia south to Mozambique.
loanda Lynes, 1930 - Angola, southern DRCongo and northern Zambia.
